FIA Gives Oil Consumption Exemption For Mercedes Latest Update

FIA Gives Oil Consumption Exemption For Mercedes Latest Update
29/8/2017

The FIA has given an Oil consumption exemption for the Mercedes "Spa" engine which is the fourth update by the three arrows in the season.
The FIA has set the oil consumption limit for engine upgrades coming after the Italian GP to be 0.9L/100m and because the Mercedes engine update came before the the Italian GP, it will be subject to the previous 1.2L/100m, which they will still run on till the rest of the year.

The oil consumption issue has been a subject right from the start of the season, with the FIA sending a message to the team that, it is actually illegal to up the Car's performance using Oil as fuel and by the the Azerbaijan GP another warning had been sent to the teams that they will view any attempts to use combustion-enhancing chemicals in their oil as a breach of regulations.

This Oil consumption issues held on till the Hungarian GP, as some teams still had an advantage using oil enhancements in their engine. The FIA released a statement before the Hungarian GP saying that engines introduced after the Italian GP will be subject to Oil Consumption restrictions, which brought about confusions as to which limit the new Mercedes update will be following, which has finally been clarified by an FIA spokesman today.

"We had several questions about oil burn from Monza onwards, a topic covered by a technical directive issued last month," he said. "The main question centred on whether engines introduced at Spa will be subject to the expectation that the 'oil consumption of any ICE element of the Power Unit introduced from the 2017 Italian GP onwards to be less than 0.9L/100km'.

"Article 23.3b of the Regulations states: 'Any of the six [Power Unit] elements will be deemed to have been used once the car's timing transponder has shown that it has left the pit lane.' So, to be clear, if an engine (ICE element) is introduced at or after the Monza race weekend, its oil consumption needs to be below 0.9L/100km whenever it is used.
