Richard Commey KOs Ray Beltran In The Eight, After Four Knockdowns
IBF lightweight Champion Richard Commey dropped former champion twice in the first round, ones in the fifth round and again in the eight round before the biut was stopped by the referee Eddie Hernandez Sr. at Pechanga Resort Casino, Temecula, California.
Ray Beltran failed to make weight for his title, tipping the scales at 136½ and with that wasn't eligible Fight Richard Commey for the title but this seemed a sign of the worst to come his way on Friday night.
The Ghanaian Richard Commey improved to (29-2) with 26 Knockouts while the 20 year PRO veteran Beltran (36-9-1, 22 KOs, 1 NC) lost for the third time in his professional career. Howbiet, that was the first since September 2008
Commey still gave credit to the former world champion after the win, capping it all up with some dancing.
“Beltran showed why he was a champion,” Commey said of the former WBO lightweight champ. “He’s a great fighter, who showed it against me tonight. I was happy to get the job done.”
“He caught me with a good shot in the [eighth] round, and the referee decided to stop the fight,” Beltran said. “Now I’m gonna get together with my team and figure out what’s next. If I fight on, I will move up to 140 pounds.”
